Local Towns Within easy reach of the park there are several small towns and villages steeped in local (and of national importance!) history, each with its very own unique atmosphere. Why not take a day to discover each one? |
Carnoustie - 15 miles
Carnoustie is a host for the British golf open - next scheduled for 2007 (book now!), and is known as one of the toughest, if not the toughest course in the world! Although the town is probably most famous for golf (it has 3 courses), it has a busy town centre, a small fishing community, a glorious stretch of open sands and plenty to see and do over the course of a day. |

Forfar - 2 miles The closest town, home of the famous Forfar bridie, the town is well known locally for it's links to one of the first scottish parliments, and has an interesting history of witchcraft!
A small royal burgh market town, Forfar also boasts a tremendous loch famed for its wildlife and unique ecosystem. The Meffan Gallery & Museum is well worth a visit, and lots of small shops will give you a great slice of traditional fayre.

Arbroath - 10 miles Arbroath Abbey was founded in 1178 and saw the declaration of scottish independence signed there on the 6th of April, 1320.
Also world famous for the Arbroath smokie fish, you can still see traditional smoking houses along the harbour. Why not spend a day exploring the history of the area and finish off with some fresh fish and chips on the busy harbour in the evening? |

Kirriemuir - 6 miles
Kirriemuir's most famous son was J.M. Barrie, writer of Peter Pan. Explore Barrie's birthplace and gardens and let the children play around the large topiary corcodile! Kirriemuir is also home to two other museums, the Kirriemuir museum and the Aviation museum, which are both worth a look. more information on Kirriemuir
